A welcome back to the blog with seven weeks to go until A Month for Mental Health begins.

Welcome back to my blog, I am very excited to start writing my weekly blogs again in the lead up to A Month for Mental Health. Recently, I have been extremely busy with my training and finishing my semester at university which has resulted in a lack of blog posts. However, now I am on the back end of training and August is looming – I wanted to restart my weekly blog posts. For those of you reading that don’t know what I am currently aiming to do in August – I am training with the aim to complete a marathon and Ironman 70.3 distance in the same month to raise money for the Samaritans.

So, to catch those up who are reading this and are following my journey to August, here’s a rundown of what A Month for Mental Health has been constructed into over the past few weeks and months.

My training has been rather intense as I have been training for both the marathon and the Ironman at the same time. I have been working on pacing for running, breathing and overall technique which led to me achieving a sub two-hour half marathon along the coastal path. As time has moved on I have been working more on cycling back out on the road after our very cold winter here in Scotland, which I feel I have made a good amount of progression on the bike and in the aero position (this position on your bike allows you to become more streamlined which is typically used in triathlon). More recently, I have had a swim block which included swimming four days a week for an hour at a time while still weight training. Although I have been making good progress in the water – it has been rather gruelling. However, I did complete my first 1.2-mile swim (the distance of swim required for an Ironman 70.3) which I completed in 41 minuets.

Throughout this training process I have found that splitting my training into blocks has helped a lot. I have researched and found that individuals that partake in ultra-endurance type events tend to say it is good to ‘block’ your training to isolate one particular skill/discipline i.e. swimming while still working on the other two disciplines which would be running and cycling in that case.

Alongside the training, I have been working on making the event in August (A Month for Mental Health) gain a larger reach and with the help of friends and family, I believe we are doing so. Currently, I have five impressive individuals joining me in my mission to raise money for the Samaritans in August by doing their own personal challenges which include cycling a mile goal within the month, swimming a mile goal within the month, running a marathon and running thirteen half marathons – all amazing feats.

We are now working on a film which will cover the entire event, and everyone involved which will be directed by Thomas Lecyn. Thomas and I worked on a shorter film that depicted A Month for Mental Health – I have left the link to that at the bottom of this blog post.

I feel it has been fantastic opening this up to others because it reaches more people while attempting to share the main message behind A Month for Mental Health which is that you are never alone and challenges are better tackled together as a team whether that be challenges of fitness or challenges with mental health.
